Security, economy, spiritual revival top agenda as Enugu Anglican Diocese holds 19th Synod

The Anglican Bishop of Enugu Diocese, Rt Rev Prof Samuel Ike has announced that issues around the state of security in Nigeria, economic challenges, spiritual revival, among others will top the agenda at the church’s 19th Synod.

Prof Ike spoke to journalists on Friday during a pre-synod press briefing at the Bishop’s Court, announcing the team as “Revival Levels: A Prepared Heart to Study, Do and Teach the Word”.

The synod will hold from June 24 to June 28, 2026, at St. Peter’s Church Ogbete, one of the oldest Anglican churches in Enugu.

Bishop Ike explained that the synod marks the third session of the 19th synod cycle and coincides with the 57th anniversary of the diocese, which was established in 1969.

Describing a synod as the highest spiritual, legislative and administrative gathering of the church, Ike said it provides an opportunity to review the work of the diocese, strengthen spiritual life and chart a course for future mission activities.

According to him, this year’s synod continues a revival emphasis that began in 2024 and seeks to encourage Christians towards deeper obedience to God’s word, genuine repentance and sustained prayer.

“We are continuing the revival cry because the church, families, communities and the nation need divine intervention. Revival begins with obedience to God’s word, repentance from sin and relentless, believing prayers,” he said.

The bishop noted that beyond spiritual matters, the church would speak on pressing national concerns affecting citizens.

“We will be speaking on the state of the Nigerian nation, governance and democracy dividends, electricity supply, security, the economy, education, the Eastern Rail project and the forthcoming 2027 general elections,” he stated.

He stressed that while the church respects constituted authority, it has a responsibility to speak truthfully on issues affecting society.

“We fear God only. We respect men and those in authority, but we will speak the truth about what is happening in our nation,” he added.

He disclosed that the synod will feature renowned Christian leaders, including evangelist Gbile Akanni, who will serve as the main guest preacher during the opening sessions, while former Minister of Power and cleric, Rev. Prof. Chinedu Nebo, will minister during the closing thanksgiving service.

Ike said several sessions, including the opening service, Bible studies, morning devotions, the presentation of the bishop’s charge and the thanksgiving service, would be open to members of the public regardless of denomination.

He also highlighted the historical significance of the venue, noting that St. Peter’s Church Ogbete played a central role in the early development of Enugu and the spread of Anglicanism across the old Enugu ecclesiastical district.

The synod is expected to attract clergy, lay delegates, church workers and worshippers from across the diocese’s nearly 200 churches.
