Head of Zone M Corrections visits Rt. Rev. Prof. Samuel O. Ike
On Thursday, 6th of February, 2025, Mr. G. O. Adagbonyin, the pioneer Asst. Controller General of Corrections (ACG), Zone M, paid a courtesy visit to His Lordship, the Rt. Rev. Prof. Samuel O. Ike, Anglican Bishop of Enugu Diocese, at the Bishop’s Court.
The Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS) had recently created the Zone M office to cover Enugu, Ebonyi and Anambra states, to ease administrative processes in the zone.
The ACG said he came to visit the Bishop in recognition of his role as a spiritual father who would guide him to success, and in recognition of what the Anglican Communion represents in the NCoS. He came in the company of Mr. Nicholas O. Obiako, State Controller Corrections, Enugu State Command, R. I. Ijomah, U. Solomon, and D. C. Ugwu, amongst others.
In his reply, the Bishop, Rt. Rev. Prof. Samuel O. Ike recognised the role of the church, in not only for the spiritual well-being of inmates but also as a body helping in their reformation – a medium to decreasing crime.
He urged the ACG to partner with the church in any way that can assist in the cardinal projects of the church – including the Educational & Health Sectors the church has embraced. The Bishop also stressed the need for a revival as the only means of curbing the ever-growing spate of crime.
In his own contribution, the Chaplain of the Anglican Prisons Chaplaincy, Ven. Dr. O. C. ObiOkoye, traced the activities of the 19-year relationship with the Custodial Centre. He spoke on how the church has continually provided food, clothing, trainings, pro bono legal services, etc. to the inmates.
Revival is the only means of curbing the ever-growing spate of crime.
He recalled the efforts of the Anglican Communion to decongest the facility through Alternate Dispute Resolution, especially the Restorative Justice System, which the Enugu State Government has embraced by instituting the Enugu State Multi-Door Courthouse (ESMDC), the Board of Prerogative of Mercy, and the Interim Committee for Restorative of Justice Program.
Also present were Ven. Azubuike Nduka (Subdean of the Cathedral), and Canon Ifeanyichukwu Agu PhD (Clerical Synod Secretary). The meeting ended with prayers for all, led by the Bishop.
